River Ilen
The River Ilen is a medium sized Salmonoid spate river flowing through
some of the most beautiful scenery in West Cork. It is nearly 21 miles long, rising 1600
ft. above sea-level at Mallagmaska. Its catchment area is 116.5 square miles, encompassing
five principal tributaries - The Saivnose, Coarliss, Achrinduff, Glounaphuca and Clodagh.
The soil in the area is mainly peat/acid on sandstone rock with some limestone outcrops.
The water quality of The River Ilen is classified as Quality A, which
means that the occurrence of pollution is well below the national average. The Biological
Survey of Irish Rivers carried out by the Environmental Protection Agency shows excellent
water quality continues to be maintained.
Keep Ireland Tidy!
Please do not leave litter, fishing line, hooks etc., on the banks of
rivers or lakes and picnic areas. Leave all areas in a condition of which you could be
proud to show them to other users.
Thank You.
Skibbereen with a population of 2,000 is the principal town on the
river and is located six miles from the mouth of the estuary and one mile below the tidal
limit. There are also several small villages within the catchment area. Industrial
development in the area is very limited, the main economic activity being farming and
commerce.
Anglers fish for salmon, including grilse, (known locally as peal), and
sea-trout. The barren nature of the water limits the growth of brown trout and no brown
trout fishing takes place as such.
